Stepping Stones – Core Game

Objective: Connect a Starting Sentence to a Random Target Sentence by stepping through other sentences that share a word of 5 or more letters.

Setup

• Each player has a whiteboard and marker.
• One player randomly selects a sentence — this becomes the Target Sentence.
• The Guide chooses a Starting Sentence from earlier in the book.
• The goal is to connect the two sentences within 3 minutes.

Rules

1. Each new sentence must share an exact 5+ letter word with the previous one.
2. Players take turns. Each has 20 seconds to respond.
3. Sentences may not be reused.
4. The full chain must reach the Target Sentence before time runs out.
5. The Guide verifies the final sentence chain at the end.

How to Play

1. A player randomly picks any sentence — this becomes the Target.
2. The Guide picks a Starting Sentence from earlier in the book.
3. Player 1 chooses a 5+ letter word from the Starting Sentence and finds a sentence that uses it.
4. Next player uses a different 5+ letter word from that new sentence to continue.
5. Repeat until the Target Sentence is reached or time expires.
6. Each player records their step on their whiteboard (word + reference).
